Paediatric Imaging at Envision

Paediatric radiology is diagnostic imaging focused on children, from babies to young adults. At Envision Medical Imaging, our Paediatric radiologists have specialised knowledge of medical conditions which affect infants, children and young people and can use imaging techniques that may prevent the need for more invasive diagnosis such as exploratory surgery. Our Paediatric radiologists are highly trained to understand which tests are most appropriate for the child, and to make sure the testing is safe and carried out properly.

Our medical imaging team are aware of the special needs of children and work to make our imaging services as stress-free as possible for children and their carers. We offer all aspects of Paediatric imaging including MRI, Ultrasound, x-ray and low-dose CT studies interpreted by our highly experienced Radiologists.

Paediatric radiology employs a range of modalities including:

An x-ray is a medical imaging technique which produces images of the internal structures and tissues in the body, such as bones and organs.X‑rays can be used to detect bone fractures, dental problems, foreign objects in the body, and various illnesses or injuries.

Pediatric Ultrasound is a safe and widely used real-time imaging technique that can be performed on infants and children. It uses high-frequency sound waves which are produced by a special ultrasound probe called a transducer. The frequency of these sound waves is higher than can be detected by the human ear. The sound waves bounce off parts of the body and are detected by probes and then used to create images that can be displayed on a monitor.

Because ultrasounds are captured in real-time they appear as moving images which enhances the diagnostic capability of the test. Ultrasound has no known harmful effects and can e used as a diagnostic tool for a variety of conditions in infants and children.

A Paediatric Hip Ultrasound is a procedure that uses ultrasound imaging primarily to evaluate the soft tissues, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and bone surrounding the hip in children. It is primarily used in infants to check for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a condition in which the ball and socket of the hip joint do not form normally.

A Paediatric Hip Ultrasound is used when DDH is suspected or detected, or when there are risk factors such as being born breech or having a family history of DDH.

A series of Paediatric Hip Ultrasounds might be carried out over a period of a few months. This can be to show normal growth of the hip or to show if the abnormality is still present. If your child is having treatment for DDH, further hip ultrasounds might be carried out to detect whether the hip joint is in a good position (for example in a harness) and to show improvement.

Paediatric hip ultrasound studies are also used to look for evidence of fluid in the hip joint. This can indicate joint inflammation, which might be associated with an infection.

A Paediatric Abdominal Ultrasound is a procedure that uses ultrasound imaging primarily to evaluate the internal organs and blood vessels within your child’s abdomen including the:

  • appendix
  • bladder
  • stomach
  • liver
  • kidneys
  • gallbladder
  • spleen
  • pancreas
  • intestines
  • testicles
  • ovaries

It can be used as a diagnostic tool to:

  • help determine the source of abdominal pain such as inflamed appendix
  • guide procedures such as biopsies
  • help detect the presence and cause of an apparent enlarged abdominal organ
  • identify the location of abnormal fluid in the abdomen
  • help determine causes of vomiting in young infants.

Our dental imaging services include OPG, Lateral and PA Ceph, Cone Beam CT and CT Dentascan. Dental imaging allows us to assess the health of your lower face, teeth, jaw, and maxillary sinuses.

Computed tomography, or CT, uses x-rays and advanced computer processing to create highly detailed two and three dimensional images of your body. CT scans are an essential diagnostic imaging tool and can help doctors to detect and monitor a wide range of medical conditions.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a type of imaging machine that uses strong magnets and low energy radio waves to produce images of your body. MRI scans are particularly useful for producing images of soft tissue such as organs and muscles, which don’t show up on x-rays. These scans can be used to diagnose or inform treatment plans for various illnesses and injuries.

At Envision we offer a range of nuclear medicine studies which are commonly used to diagnose, treat or determine the stage of many diseases, including types of cancer, heart disease, gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurological disorders and other abnormalities in the body.
